Does Every Building Have Asbestos?
Category: News , • September 28, 2023

In today’s world, the term ‘asbestos‘ often conjures up concerns about health risks and safety. For decades, this naturally occurring mineral was celebrated for its durability and fire-resistant properties, finding its way into countless buildings and homes.

But as its health dangers became clear, it has since become a household word for danger and hidden risk. Now, a question emerges: does every building really contain asbestos? Join our team as we unpack the history, usage, and prevalence of this controversial material in modern construction!

The History of Asbestos

As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Asbestos is the name used to group a class of naturally occurring mineral fibers that have been widely used for industrial processes and products and is associated with adverse effects on human health.”

From the late 19th century up until the latter half of the 20th century, asbestos was widely used in various building materials. Some common applications included:

  • Insulation
  • Roofing and Siding
  • Floor Tiles
  • Textured Paints and Coatings
  • Pipe and Boiler Insulation
  • And more.

However, by the 1970s and 1980s, the health risks associated with asbestos became widely recognized. Inhalation of asbestos fibers can lead to serious and often fatal diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. As a result, many countries began banning or severely restricting its use in construction and other industries.
